(CRAFX Certified)

A better way, checked.

A mark for products, spaces, workflows and rituals that are genuinely better to live with. Not a badge for sale, and not a list of our own work.

(The idea)

We are not selling you another product.

Almost everything is sold on being new. Very little is sold on being better, because better is slower to explain and harder to prove. So most of the time nobody bothers, and the person choosing is left with a price and a photograph.

Michelin sold tyres, then wrote a guide to the road, and the guide outlasted the argument that started it. People used it to decide where to go, which is a far bigger thing than a tyre. That is the shape of what we are building.

CRAFX Certified is a standard, not a catalogue. It can sit on something we designed or on something we had nothing to do with. The mark says one thing: somebody took this apart, compared it honestly with the alternatives, and found it better.

The question we want people to end up asking is simple. Is there a better way, and what does CRAFX Certified say about it?

(How the standard works)

01

Evaluate

We take the thing apart, on paper and in use. What problem it claims to solve, what people do today instead, what it costs over its life, what happens when it breaks. The sheet is the same whoever made it.

02

Certify

It passes or it does not. There are no levels and no partial marks, because a scale is how a standard turns into a sticker. What passes is written up, so anyone can read what was judged.

03

Recommend

What passes gets recommended, to the societies, the brands and the people who ask us what to buy. That is the whole point of doing it. A standard nobody acts on is a pamphlet.

(What we look for)

Twelve things, asked in the same order every time

None of these are opinions about taste. Every one of them can be shown to somebody who disagrees.

  • 01

    It solves a real problem

Something people already work around, complain about or quietly put up with.

  • 02

    It is meaningfully better

Better enough to notice without being told, not better on a spec sheet.

  • 03

    The thinking shows

Somebody made decisions here. The shape, the order, the material choice all have a reason behind them.

  • 04

    It is easier

Fewer steps, fewer parts, less to remember, less to explain to the next person.

  • 05

    It lasts

Built to still be in use in five years, and honest about what wears out first.

  • 06

It is good to look at where that matters

Beauty is not decoration here. Things people are proud of are things people keep.

  • 07

    It wastes less

Less material, less packaging, less power, less thrown away at the end.

  • 08

    It gives time back

Minutes a day, hours a month, measured rather than claimed.

  • 09

    The value is clear

What you get for what you pay can be said in one sentence.

  • 10

    It explains itself

A person meeting it for the first time knows what to do without a manual.

  • 11

    People recommend it

The real test. It comes up in conversation without anybody being asked.

  • 12

    The experience is better

Not only the object. Buying it, living with it and fixing it are part of the judgement.

(Must)

Fail one of these and there is no mark

These are not scored against each other. Any one of them missing ends the assessment.

  • It names a real ritual or a real problem, in plain words, before anything else.
  • It is meaningfully better than what people use today, and the difference can be shown.
  • It holds up in Indian conditions where that matters: the power, the dust, the water, the way buildings are actually run.
  • When something goes wrong it falls back to the better way, not the worse one. The easy path has to be the good path.
  • Where it is physical, the materials are what they are said to be.
  • There is a way to repair it or replace a part, and somebody who will do it.
  • It keeps working when the person who championed it moves on.
  • It creates demand beyond a single sale, for the maker and for the people around it.

(Should)

These make the case easier to carry

Not required, and their absence will not stop something passing. They are what makes a good thing spread.

  • The difference can be photographed, before and next to after.
  • It does not generate a queue of support calls.
  • People pass it on without being prompted.
  • A partner, a dealer or a society can carry it without hand holding.
  • Safety and compliance are written down, not assumed.
  • The improvement is felt on the first day, not after a quarter.

(What can earn the mark)

It does not have to be an object, and it does not have to be ours

  • Homes

The fittings, storage and small fixes that change how a flat is lived in.

  • Societies and shared spaces

Lobbies, parking, waste, water, signage, the parts everybody uses and nobody owns.

  • Packaging

Packs that protect better, ship lighter and leave less behind.

  • Products

Objects made by anyone, ours or not, judged on the same sheet.

  • Workflows

The way a team does a recurring job, when the new way is clearly better.

  • Services and rituals

How something is delivered, maintained or repeated, week after week.

(Who this is for)

People who have to choose, and people who have built something better

  • Societies and residents associations

You are choosing between five quotes for the same job and none of them tell you which is actually better. An assessment gives you something to hold the decision against.

  • Brands and manufacturers

You have built something genuinely better and the market cannot tell it apart from the cheap version next to it on the shelf.

  • Studios, offices and workplaces

You have a way of working that other people keep asking about. Written down and tested, it becomes something others can adopt.

(Status)

Where this stands today

The standard is being written now, and the first assessments are being run quietly with a small number of partners. Nothing carries the mark yet. When something does, it will be listed here with the assessment behind it, so you can see what was judged and why it passed.

If you have something you believe belongs here, or you are choosing between options and want a straight answer, write to us. Tell us what it is and what it replaces. That is enough to start.
